Gobindo Home, Panihati, an iconic building in the Northern suburbs of Calcutta, houses an orphanage for destitute girls. On 26th August 2018, we conducted an eye check-up camp for the inmates. Led by Foundation member and ophthalmologist Dr Supratim Biswas and his team, and supported by other members and also the staff of the Home, eye checkup was done for 140 girls.

The day being the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan, the inmates tied the Rakhi on the hands of the Foundation members in a simple yet warm ceremony. The day ended with a community lunch where the foundation members served and shared food with the inmates and staff members.

Based on the eye check-up exercise, it was found that as many as 30 inmates actually needed spectacles. This was subsequently arranged by the foundation, and on 15th September 2018, they were handed over to them.

Despite being a single-day project with limited scope and funding, the key significance of the project was the response it triggered among the members, and reinforced our belief that together, we can impart positive changes. While it was a great teamwork (the program was entirely funded by members), a few names need special mention – Debarya Majumder for fund collection, Dr Supratim Biswas for setting up the eye-camp, and Arindam Dhar for liaisoning with Home authorities.
